Opposition Unites To Give Fight To Authorities During “Elections”

On June 21 a common democratic coalition with a directing body and binding decisions is to be created.

Opposition is close to creation of a democratic coalition for the upcoming “elections” and holding a Congress of the democratic forces. Thus, it means the broadest association of opposition in 10 years, since Aliaksandr Milinkevich was nominated a single candidate for presidency in 2006.

The former presidential candidate Mikalai Statkevich told tut.by that two-week talks inside the opposition were held on June 15-16.

– We have agreed to create a common democratic coalition with a decision-making body and binding decisions, – the politician said.

He added that oppositional structures started to sign the agreement on coordinating their actions during the electoral campaign and after it.

– The document has been approved by everyone. Another session is to take place on June 21, where signing by the rest of organizations is expected.

Statkevich specified that representatives of the United Civil Party, the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada), For Freedom movement, the Belarusian Party of Left Forces “Just World”, the organizing committee for creation of the Belarusian Christian Democratic party, the Women’s Party Nadzeja and the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Narodnaya Hramada), the REP independent trade union, the movement of solidarity Razam, and the movement that is being created by Uladzimir Niakliaeu “For Statehood and Independence of Belarus” have taken part in the process of preparing the document.

This information has been confirmed by the UCP leader Anatol Liabedzka. He said that he has a positive opinion of the talks.

– It is important for us to demonstrate unity – and through a format of a common event as well. An ideal variant is a Congress of the Democratic Forces, – he specified.

The politician clarified that holding the event is at the stage of discussion now.

– The matter is settled for the UCP, and more widely, for the center-right coalition (UCP, BCD and For Freedom) – we are ready. I do not know any political structure in the opposition, which is against the dialogue. This congress could become a start of the election campaign, – the interlocutor concluded.

As said by Liabedzka, the democratic opposition is close to coordination of actions for the period of the parliamentary campaign:

– One of the issues for cooperation is an agreed list of candidates, but it does not mean “one constituency – one candidate” for us. We are moving to one candidate as much as we can, but in the places where it is impossible – for a common close coordination.

One of the BCD leaders Vital Rymasheuski imparted apprehensions the democratic forces have as they approach the upcoming elections:

– Lukashenka’s regime will let its people get into the parliament, pretending they are opposition. The words that Belarus had made a big push towards democracy would be a lie. It could become a heavy blow for us, so we should unite to the greatest possible extent.

Rymasheuski attracted attention to the fact that the idea of a common congress belongs to Mikalai Statkevich and Uladzimir Niakliaeu.

– Unfortunately, not everyone joined us in spring, but the second session should be held already, and it is to become more representational.
