European Belarus Standing For Uniting Of Opposition Without Communists

The electoral campaign should result in creating a strong pro-European opposition center in Belarus.

This is said in the statement of the civil campaign “European Belarus”. We are publishing the full text of the statement here:

“The civil campaign “European Belarus” persistently stands for the European choice of our state, in defense of independence.

From this perspective, the “European Belarus”, together with the majority of the democratic opposition subjects, prepared and signed the Declaration in Support of the Belarusian Independence.

Out of the necessity to unite the leading opposition forces, the “European Belarus” supported participation of real opposition candidates in the electoral campaign in order to promote European values and to use the “elections” to create a pro-European opposition center.

The “European Belarus”, as most democratic forces, considers that there are no elections in Belarus, that the authorities will try to use this campaign with an aim of legalization of the dictator’s regime in the West, to defraud credits for keeping the repressive apparatus. At the same time, the regime refuses to include the necessary amendments into the electoral legislation in accordance with the recommendations of the ODIHR OSCE.

In the conditions like these, participation in the electoral campaign should be used for sharp criticism of the regime, which has been illegally keeping the power in Belarus for over 20 years. Participation in the electoral campaign should result in creating a strong pro-European opposition center, which would defend the European way of development for Belarus.

The “European Belarus” welcomes, supports and takes part in the consultations between the organizations-members of the Belarusian National Congress, and other pro-European parties and movements.

Simultaneously, the “European Belarus” states that it considers inacceptable to create an alliance with the Belarusian Communist party “Fair World”, which supports Belarus’ participation in the so-called Eurasian Union, approves Russia’s aggressive actions against Ukraine in Crimea and Donbass, stands for the military integration with Russia, against decommunization in Ukraine and Poland, against the European choice for Belarus.

Such alliance with communists in the conditions of the real threat to the independence of Belarus may undermine credibility of the opposition both inside the country and abroad. At the same time, unification of pro-European forces will help to defend independence and the democratic future of Belarus.
