An activist of European Belarus, a taxi-driver Leanid Kulakou, detained by traffic policemen on June 21, told Radio Svaboda that while he was at the police department of Tsentralny (Central) district of Minsk, the unknown stole white-red-white flags from his car.

Policemen have not confirmed, and have not denied they had been involved in disappearance of the little flags, but said that “they are going to look into it carefully.”

“My things have been stolen! Two flags are stolen, and flagstaffs are left in the car, – Leanid Kulakou said to journalists – Now I am writing an application for a criminal case to be opened, and they took it with a smile.

Earlier policemen made me remove the flags, I refused and said, let you remove them, but write a protocol with the grounds for such actions. They took me to the 5th floor to write explanations, and said they should look into the matter, as if it were a picket, that scrutineers would come. And when I left the police department, there were no flags.

They said to write explanations, why it had been done by me. I said I showed my civic position, I showed my support to sovereignty and independence of Belarus, exhibited patriotism. And that I do not feel guilty, I do not regret I did so.

At the police department journalists were told that the identity of Kulakou had been checked, and then he was released. Policemen didn’t know how it could happen that the flags were stolen right near the police building.

“Maybe someone was passing by, saw the flags and removed them, – an officer on duty explained. – Cars are not parked at the territory of the police department, they are parked along the traffic area, and surveillance cameras do not cover this area.”

The flags were received by Kulakou from Art-Siadziba (Art-Estate) in the framework of the campaign WRW-Mobile: white-red-white flags are handed out for free, and photos with them are asked to be sent in exchange for gifts. As the director of Art-Siadziba Paval Belavus told to journalists, flags on cars are not forbidden, unlike making improvised pictures on cars.
