Andrei Sannikau: European Union Should Be Urgently Reformatted
Andrei Sannikau

“Brexit” – a victory of democracy and a defeat of common sense.

This is how the leader of the civil campaign “European Belarus” Andrei Sannikau commented on the results of a referendum in Great Britain.

“”Brexit” is a victory of democracy and a defeat of common sense. Actually, not of democracy, but of the irresponsible populism, which influence on the Western democratic institutions is becoming more and more noticeable. Europe is in mourning, the Kremlin is celebrating.

Neither Great Britain nor Europe will benefit from “Brexit”. Catastrophic situation on the stock markets after the referendum is the best evidence. And this is only the beginning. But the Kremlin is rubbing its hands in anticipation of generous gifts: from the easing of sanctions to the cheapened property in Britain which one can buy on the occasion. The war, unleashed in Ukraine, is paying off: Europe is creaking at the seams.

In fact, “Brexit” was logical. Europe’s inability to cope with the crisis on its borders, the surrender even to the kolkhoz dictatorship of Lukashenka, could not but lead to upheavals within Europe itself. The European Union needs a serious reformatting. And urgently. They should abandon mercantile approach to world politics, they should stop to deal with political crooks and should return their values. Otherwise, Euroatlantism will start to crack as well. And it will be a catastrophe,” - Sannikau wrote on Facebook.
