Liabedzka: This “Electoral Campaign” Remains Illegitimate
ANATOL LIABEDZKA

The “parliamentary elections” demonstrate total bankruptcy of the electoral system in Belarus.

Chairman of the United Civil Party Anatol Liabedzka has said this at a press-conference in Minsk on August 18. According to him, “this is a bane for the authorities rather than the opposition”.

“The system has fully over-exhausted itself in 20 years: the administrative resource which used to be the key figure in the electoral campaigns is no longer capable of reviving the “parliamentary elections”, of making the people take any interest to them,” — he has said.

The UCP leader has noted that the economic and financial crisis also does not contribute to the increase of interest to the model of the electoral campaign, offered by the Belarusian authorities.

He thinks that democratic contenders, who were registered as candidates, and those who appealed against denials in registration, should come up with a joint message containing political assessment of the “elections”.

“We have every ground to state that the parliamentary campaign does not comply with the OSCE standards, it is not fair and honest. This means, in case the existing trend remains, it cannot be legitimate,” — the UCP leader has said.

Liabedzka is convinced that it will be “a strong message to voters, to the authorities and to the international organizations”.
