Minsk Dwellers Were Reminded About KGB Crimes

Activists gathered at the capital Kalvaryjskaye cemetery to remember the names and fates of people killed by the NKVD and KGB.

The action took place in the framework of the campaign “The Return of Memory,” Radio Racyja informs.

“On the 29th day of each month, we remember the victims of Soviet repressions in Minsk,” – social activist Yauhen Batura said.

– This is due to the fact that on 29 October, 1937, almost all of the Belarusian intelligentsia was executed. We want this day to be honored at the state level. And we remind the government about that. We remind the way we can: we go there and pray for the dead, – the activist said.

Historian Ihar Kuzniatsou told that he had collected data on the total number of mass execution places in Belarus:

– We must show that this is the whole territory of Belarus. There are more than a dozen of burial places in Minsk, and at least three of them in each regional center. Take Mahiliou, Homel, etc., there are also district centers. There are more than 48 settlements in total on my map, and more than 150 places of mass executions all round Belarus. It is clear though, that the largest number was shot here in Minsk.

The solidarity movement Razam arranges similar memorable events. On October 29, both initiatives – the solidarity movement and the campaign “The Return of Memory,” are planning to hold a joint event, honoring the memory of victims of political repressions.
