"It Is the Last Time, Perhaps"

Why has Lukashenka left for Egypt?

Who would throw cold water on vacation on a southern resort? Aliaksandr Lukashenka did not miss the opportunity to have a rest. However, the ruler's press service states that he "works hard there."

He talks about the economy and cooperation. Aliaksandr Lukashenka flew to Cairo, in addition to meetings with the authorities of the country of Pharaohs and local businessmen he is going to take part in Belarusian-Egyptian business forum. Then the same programme is planned for Sudan. And he has only three days.

"I think he just got tired in 2016. He needs to relax. And Egypt is a traditional place of resort for our citizens. So, he's decided to get wants and needs met," economist Leu Marholin says.

Everything is clear about wants. Belarus now is covered with snow. And there is a sunshine, the sea, high temperature in Egypt. What concerns needs, the situation is more complex here. The level of trade between the countries is not as high as it should require a visit of the Belarusian dictator, Leu Marholin affirms:

"With regard to Egypt, there is production of Belarusian tractors, and it, as they say, will expand. It is either expanded or some new production is to be opened. But this is the level when ordinary minister is enough, or even the Director General of the Minsk Tractor Plant, to do it."

As for Sudan, the most active foreign trade was in 2013 - just over $70 million - at the expense of Belarusian export, then it collapsed. Ordinary citizens interviewed by Belsat TV channel do not expect anything extraordinary.

"He has his own stress. I guess, he is going on vacation. Perhaps, for the last time," one of respondents says.

Other person voices his opinion:

"Given milk wars, a few years ago there was a sugar war with Russia, they have to put production somewhere!"

Meanwhile, Lukashenka is not in a hurry to his closest ally. In the end of December the ruler of Belarus referred to great business ignored the EEU summit in St. Petersburg, other member-countries signed there Customs Code of Interstate Association. The first foreign visit of Lukashenka is planned to the eastern neighbours this year.

"It would be illogical not to go to the summit in the end of December and now to seek Putin on Russian resorts, this is the reason why he ignored it," Leu Marholin notes.

At the moment Belarusian and Egyptian parties signed about a dozen documents. According to official Minsk, in particular, Egypt is ready to approve the contract with our country on sullage filtration. The deal amounts only to $3 million.
