Lithuanian Foreign Ministry Appointed Darius Degutis Special Embassador On Belarusian NPP

The Special Embassador position was established to coordinate the actions, concerning Astravets NPP issues at the international level.

On Wednesday, January 4, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to appoint diplomat Darius Degutis the ambassador for performing special tasks, concerning the issues of the Belarusian NPP, which is under construction in Astravets.

On Tuesday, during a meeting of ministers of foreign affairs, energy and the environment, it was decided to appoint an ambassador to perform specific tasks on the Belarusian NPP, Prime reports.

The post has been designed to strengthen the position of Lithuanian responsible agencies and to "coordinate actions, concerning the issues of the Belarusian NPP project, on an international scale."

The Foreign Ministry also reports that Degutis will set forward Lithuania’s unified position concerning the Belarusian NPP issues, related to nuclear safety, environmental issues, and will also monitor the situation at the national, regional, international scale, will come in on the co-ordination between the Lithuanian authorities.

"In addition, the Ambassador will present the Lithuanian position, cooperating with the international community, will share information with all the countries, which are responsible for radiation and nuclear safety, environmental protection, with governmental and non-governmental organizations, parliaments," – the MFA adds.

Darius Degutis has been working in the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry since 1991. Previously, he worked at the diplomatic missions of Denmark and the United States, was Lithuanian Ambassador to Poland and Israel.
