40% of the national "brain-drain" is absorbed by the States
11:09, 19/02/2001, BelaPAN

According to the results of the sociological poll, conducted in November 2000 among the country`s research laboratories and universities by the Center for Monitoring of the migration of academics and scientists of the National Academy of Sciences in 1999 the total amount of Belarusian professors and scholars, who changed their country of residence, increased by over 9%.

The intellectual immigration from Belarus in the year 1999 spread to the following countries: USA - 39% of those, who received a green card or stays abroad without a permit, Germany - 21%, Israel - 9%. Other countries, popular with the Belarus nationals, are Russia, Canada, Poland, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Sweden, Holland, France.

In 1996-1999 around 70 academics would immigrate overseas each year. Is it little or a lot? Statistics shows that this approximately equals to the number of professors and scholars, engaged in scientific research in Vitebsk region in 1999.
