Only 8% Students Favor Lukashenko
11:03, 28/05/2001, ZUBR

Such conclusion was drawn by ZUBR`s pollsters after they surveyed 1007 students in the country`s six leading alma mater. The poll was conducted in the Belarusian State University of Programming and Radio-Electronics, Belarusian State Polytechnics, Belarusian State University, Belarusian State Economic University, Belarusian State Pedagogical University and Belarusian State Linguistic University.

When asked "Will you go cast votes at the presidential ballot?" 88,5% students answered positively. Only 7% said "no" and another 4,5% don`t know yet.

According to the poll`s figures, only 8,2% of students may vote for Alexander Lukashenko. 58,4% will support a different person, whereas 33,4% can`t say for sure right now.

Serious unbelief in the ultimate victory over the regime was witnessed after the question "Who will win the elections - Lukashenko or alternative candidate?". 40,2% said "Lukashenko" and 38,% - "alternative candidate". 21,3% made no predictions.

The most conservative universities were traditionally the Polytechnics and the Pedagogical University - 12% of their students feel like voting for Lukashenko. In such democratic institutions as the Belarusian State University and the Belarusian State Economic University only 4% prefer Lukashenko to the rest.

54,1% said they are familiar with ZUBR`s activities. 44,1% heard nothing of the movement so far and 1,8% abstained. Almost half of those, aware of ZUBR, assess its activities positively - 45,7%, whereas 22,2% speak of it in negative terms. 32,1% said they haven`t yet developed any attitude to the ZUBR movement.
