Teachers’ Number Decreases By 20%
11:04, 07/05/2002

Ministry of Education has declared its intention to cut down the quantity of schoolteachers. The ministry speaks of difficult demographic situation in he country, extra graduates of the teacher-training institutions, and to the fact that from the beginning of the new academic year the senior pupils will learn five days a week instead of six. Besides, the government is going to raise salaries of the teachers who would be left owing to those who would be released.

As Radio Svaboda was informed in one of the grammar schools in Minsk, the employees would be chosen according their experience and qualification. So recent graduates have slight chances to remain in schools. After that the teachers’ hours would be extended and their summer leave reduced.

The director of the Belarusian Humanitarian Lyceum Uladzimir Kolas believes that these innovations should not be carried out so unexpectedly and secretly from the society:

“The things that happen to the education are connected not only with the demographic situation, but with the economical as well. Last year the schools did not receive money for renovation. We already have order to cut down our staff for 10%, though the number of pupils remains the same. It proves that the economical policy is a flop, and it should be anticipated. Such hasty actions are ineffective, the reform is not done like that”.
