Protest at Bobruisk Leather Factory 11:05, 07/05/2002
The workers of the Bobruisk leather factory, having faced for the first time salary payment delays, went on a strike. The company always used to function stably and efficiently, being by right considered one of the town’s strongest manufactures. The salary level was also quite high here. For instance, the average March salary here constituted almost 300thsd rubles. In other words, the employees got used to good living. And when they encountered problems with sales, resulting in a two-months salary payment delay, the workers set their minds to protest.
In the beginning of the working day, reports “BDG”, the indignant people left their workshops and embarked on a spontaneous strike at the company’s entrance. Parallel to the economic demands, they also put forth political.
Director general of the plant Mikhail Kunts, having immediately finished business talks in Moscow, returned to Bobruisk, seeking to explain to the revolutionaries the root-cause of the problem. The situation at the plant is indeed tough. The clients owe to it 1bln BLR and $150thsd. The director pledged that they would clear off their debt before workers in full size by May 9 at the latest. On hearing him say that, the workers left each for his own workshop.
