Preliminary court hearings on the defamation lawsuit, filed by ZUBR activist Aleksei Shydlovsky against the official regime’s mouthpiece “Sovetskaya Belorussiya” and its editor-in-chief Pavel Yakubovich, took place on July 1. The defendant’s attorney didn’t deny the fact that the paper published false data about Aleksei Shydlovsky, claiming that the refutation can see light at any time, convenient for the plaintiff. However, the size of the compensation, which the ZUBR activist demanded – 6 million rubles from the periodical and same amount from Yakubovich – was regarded as too high by the judge. The real size of the compensation will be defined by the Sovietsky district court of Minsk on July 27.
The session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, due to take place in Berlin on July 6-10, will be visited by two Belarusian delegations – one representing the “national assembly” and one from the Consultative Council of the opposition political parties.
