July 7, 2002 marks the second anniversary of the disappearance at Minsk airport of the young Belarusian cameraman, Dmitri Zavadsky, who was working at the time for the Russian television channel, ORT. The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Freimut Duve, sympathizes with the family and friends of Mr. Zavadsky, and he once again expresses his dismay that, after two years, many questions about the missing journalist have gone unanswered.
Court of the Moscow District in Minsk found Belarusian artist Ales Pushkin guilty on charges relating to the Article 166 of the Administrative Code (disobedience to the police) and sentenced him to a fine equal to 6 minimal wages. You must remember that on July 3 Ales Pushkin was seized by the police officers, preventing him from carrying out a performance at the main avenue of Minsk in remembrance of real heroes who struggled for independence of Belarus.
The national committee for celebration of the 120 anniversary of Janka Kupala has prepared a big artistic program for the day of the great Belarusian poet. Famous writers and poets, public figures and politicians, artists and actors were invited to the monument of Janka Kupala. Volga Ipatava, Alyaksej Rahulia, Uladzimer Nyaklyaeu, Syarhei Zakonnikau held speeches. Speakers told not only about Kupala’s heritage, they reminded of the arrests of Pushkin and Yuri Khadyka, the attempt of the authorities to remove white-red-white flags in Kupala’s native village Vyazynka the day before.
On July 5 in the evening vice chairman of the party Belarusian Popular Front Yury Khadyka was arrested by police next to his house and taken to the special detention center in the Akrestsyna Street in Minsk.
The court over the famous Belarusian artist Ales Pushkin is scheduled for today, July 8, at 12 am in the Court of the Moscow district in Minsk (Hrushevaya St., 9). Ales Pushkin was seized and cruelly beaten by the police officers and people in mufti. He could not manage to finish his artistic action - performance in remembrance of real heroes who fought for independence of Belarus.
Polish President Alexandr Kwasniewski in his speech at the conference of the Polish ambassadors in Warsaw, has determined three priority aims of the country’s foreign policy. As said by him, they are Poland’s entering the EU, increasing the political weight of the country in Europe, participation in the process of rapprochement of Belarus and Ukraine with the European institutions.
The questions of the reinforcement of the air borders protection in the framework of the united system of the anti-aircraft defenses of the CIS are to be discussed on July 8-10 during the visit to Belarus of the Russian Commander-in-Chief of the Russian military air forces colonel-general-colonel V.Mikhailov. As the Vice Commander-in-Chief lieutenant general Y. Bondarev informed the Interfax, it is planned that the documents will be signed that would serve to the perfection of the guarding in framework of the common system of the CIS anti-aircraft defense. Mikhailov is to visit the Central Command Post of the Air Force and anti-aircraft defenses of Belarus, several Air Force and anti-aircraft defenses divisions and an aircraft-repairing plant in Baranavichy. Besides a meeting of V.Mikhailov with the defense minister of Belarus L. Maltsev is planned.
