CoE Awaits “Signals” From Belarus 16:37, 06/12/2002
The Council of Europe representative claims that the issue of granting Belarus membership in this organization is untimely, said during the Friday press-conference in the central headquarters of “Interfax” in Moscow deputy CoE secretary general Mr.Buer-Buciccio. Deputy secretary general mentioned the conditions, which need to be fulfilled by Belarus in order to become a CoE member. RIA “Novosti” correspondent reports that the woman mentioned freedom of media, independent judiciary and attempts at the eradication of corruption.
Moreover, deputy secretary general of the Council of Europe underscored that the “idea of a democratic country implies the independence of the state branches of power from one another, especially the independence of legislative”. In this regard, she noted that “Belarus has no sufficient independence of legislative”. At the same time she pointed out that the Council of Europe would like to get more concrete signals from Lukashenko about his readiness to engage in the democratization processes”. She pinpointed that at the moment the CoE sees no such signals.
