Alexander Chigir to Stand New Trial 11:38, 12/12/2002
Inmate of the Ivatsevichi colony Alexander Chigir has been recently convoyed off to Minsk, where they charged him with illicit entrepreneurial activities in addition to his previous indictment for alleged car thefts. If they hold trial on the matter and pass an accusatory verdict, the young man will get another three years of jail.
Meantime, Alexander Chigir has already been sentenced to seven years and, according to the law, he cannot get his term prolonged anyway. So why is this new criminal persecution of the former Premier’s son? His mother and defender in court Julia Chigir said that she doesn’t know the answer to this question. Charges of illicit entrepreneurial activities, raised against her son, sound trumped-up to her. According to Julia Chigir, her son had never been an entrepreneur. He only sold spare parts to cars as a hired trader of Kolyada, who had been interrogated along with him. The woman deems that it is only after the beatings and threats that Kolyada gave false testimony against her son, which was then used in court. “They beat Kolyada and beat Alexander. The case files contain documents about these cases of ill-treatment, but nobody examined them back in the past: neither procuracy nor anyone else,” – Radio Svaboda was told by Julia Chigir. The lady doesn’t rule out a possibility that the procuracy embarked on the examination of their family cases after they petitioned the authorities over the persecution, unleashed against them by the investigative committee. As you remember, most politicians and human rights advocates in Belarus believe that the authorities are persecuting the family of Chigirs in retaliation for the former PM Mikhail Chigir’s opposition activities.
