Belarusian oppositionist are being transformed into vagrants 17:11, 04/08/2003, Irina Khalip, `Novaja gazeta`
On Wednesday the deputy of the 13th Supreme Council the second rank captain Valery Schukin became homeless. The Polotsk city court suddenly recognized his authorization to the dwelling issued in 1996 to be invalid.
Prehistory: the retired officer Valery Schukin became the deputy of the Supreme Council in 1995. He proposed himself as a candidate in Polotsk. After one year he was given a dwelling as a deputy - -a room in a hostel of agricultural college. At the time of pre-referendum conflict between Lukashenko and the parliament Schukin signed for the impeachment and just like other signers turned to be among out of favor deputies. Officer and deputy became human rights advocate and oppositionist.
He was arrested dozens of times. It occurred to him to celebrate New Year and birthdays in prison.
Recently Valery Schukin became the member of a new bloc “Free Belarus” and declared his intention to stand as a candidate at the parliamentary elections next year. The Polotsk court after having deprived him of a dwelling and registration, made him homeless and deprived him of the possibility to participate in the elections: in accordance with Belarusian legislation one can be put on vote or from a party organization either according to the registration. Now Schukin isn’t a member of a party.
Before the candidates fro the opposition were knocked out of the pre-electoral race by different means, but now the authorities hit upon such a simple and brilliant step for the first time. In every authorization to an apartment one can easily find out an invalid hook. And the rivals are liquidated especially taking into account the fact that the bloc “Free Belarus’ engaged well-known and respected but non-party people.
