No Postal Privacy In Belarus

Valer Levanewsky, Chairman of Belarusian strike committee of businessmen was summoned to the police department of Lenin district of Hrodna for providing explanation. He was summoned to police by the order of the prosecutor general of Hrodna Oblast, to which a letter by Levanewsky with standard New Year congratulations was attached. The letter was addressed to representatives of the Ukrainian diplomatic corps. The same letters were sent to all Embassies in Belarus.

In particular, the letter contained the following phrases:

Dear representatives of the diplomatic mission!

Congratulations on the occasion of the New Year. I wish you success in you activities, aimed at development of friendly ties between our countries, and for establishment of democracy in Belarus. Your support is needed by the people of Belarus in their hard struggle for independence and democracy. The experience of humankind progress shows a great influence of world community in the achievement of liquidation of dictators’ regimes. We hope that with Your help Belarus will be able to obtain its adequate place in the world community as an independent, prosperous and democratic country.

The Prosecutor’s office tried to find out was it really Levanewsky who sent the letter. Besides, he asked who and when wrote this letter, who and where had published the bulletins “Predprinimantel” (Entrepreneur) and “Fakel Prometeja”, and if these actions are violation of the law by Levanewsky.
