Claudia Nolte: "Events In Ukraine are a signal to Belarus"
11:23, 02/12/2004

Bundestag deputy, CDU/CSU Reporter on Belarus Claudia Nolte who was in Kyiv these days, is sure that the events in Ukraine are to become a signal both for the Belarusian society, and for the EU, which is responsible for Belarus not being overshadowed of Ukrainian events. “Firstly, I am still under a great impression of what is going on in Ukraine. It is a definite sign that people have a very high social and political awareness. I hope that the events in Ukraine would become a signal for those countries where the elections are neither free nor transparent, where the falsifications take place during the vote count; that they would become a real impulse for discussions about the further direction. As for the position of the EU, its member-countries are to be responsible for Belarus not being forgotten against the background of Ukrainian events,” told Claudia Nolte in her interview to Radio Svaboda.

“I know from my own experience that Europe follows the events in Belarus with interest, as before. On the weekend a meeting with participation of prominent politicians and public figures of Europe is to be held in Vilnius. It is to be dedicated both to Ukraine and Belarus.

Our faction, CDU/CSU, will introduce the Belarusian question for debate in Bundestag. Now we are preparing a bill of new resolution on Belarus, which, we hope, would be supported by other factions, and at the level of government as well. I am myself preparing a parliamentary inquiry to our government, in order to find out what role Belarus had at the summit EU-Russia. The aim of our politicians is that not a single neighboring country would be overlooked, even in case when all attention is focused on Ukraine,” told the MP.
