Trade union leader Aleksandr Yaroshuk to attend congress of International Confederation of Free Trade Unions 11:27, 02/12/2004
Aleksandr Yaroshuk, chairman of the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions, have left for Japan to take part in the 18th congress of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) scheduled to take place in Miyazaki between December 5 and 10.
The ICFTU currently unites more than 230 organizations representing 150 countries on five continents. The Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions was admitted to the ICFTU in December 2003.
As Mr. Yaroshuk told BelaPAN before his departure, all large trade union organizations in the CIS had been invited to the congress, except for the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus (FTUB) and the National Center of Trade Unions of Turkmenistan.
The ICFTU has repeatedly accused the Belarusian authorities and the pro-government FTUB for violating trade union rights. On its initiative, the International Labor Organization and the European Union set up commissions to probe reported abuses of trade union rights in Belarus.
