Where Arms Bought by Belarus Abroad Get To? 15:26, 04/02/2005
Officials assert that it goes for supplying the Belarusian arsenal. Meanwhile, some experts do not exclude that Belarus is trading in this equipment after modernization at Belarusian plants.
Over the past years Belarus had bought arms abroad several times. In particular, 34 howitzers were bought in Slovakia, 53 tanks T-72B in Kazakhstan. How these arms were used?
Independent experts notice that need of these acquisitions is doubtful. “There are more than 1,700 tanks in Belarus, it is one of the largest tanks part in Europe,” the independent military expert Alyaksandar Alesin says. He does not exclude that after upgrading the military equipment could be sold abroad. But most likely it would be used for renewal of military equipment in Belarus, and the released equipment sold to the countries of the third world.
According to the official information, Belarus sold the greatest quantity of arms to Sudan and Cote d’Ivoire. Infantry combat vehicles, howitzers and even training planes were delivered there. Meanwhile, internal armed conflicts are going on in these countries.
