Bruce Jackson: "Freedom comes first"
15:02, 21/02/2005

Before the summit of the US and Russian presidents in Bratislava, the hearings were carried out in the US Senate “Retreat From Democracy In Russia”. It has given another occasion to think that on February 24 the talk between George Bush and Vladimir Putin could be rather stern: many people urge Bush to take a more compelling stand towards Russia, as the country is more and more retreating from democratic standards. One of the grudges of the world community towards Vladimir Putin is the support of dictator’s regime of Alyaksandr Lukashenka in Belarus, told Bruce Jackson, president of the Project on Transitional Democracies, American NATO Committee president at the hearings “Retreat from Democracy In Russia”. “With regard to Belarus, President Putin’s government has been an accomplice with Alexander Lukashenko in the construction and maintenance of what has been often called “the last dictatorship in Europe.” This unholy alliance has brutalized and impoverished the people of Belarus and is distinguished only by the degree of Russian cynicism which motivated it. Here again, I cannot improve on the words of Putin-advisor Gleb Pavlovsky: “We are totally satisfied with the level of our relations with Belarus. Russia will clearly distinguish between certain characteristics of a political regime in a neighboring country and its observance of allied commitments. Belarus is a model ally.” Think about this for a moment. The last dictatorship in Europe is the closest ally of the Putin Government. If this fact were not a tragedy, it would be laughable,” told Jackson. Today Bruce Jackson answers questions of the Charter’97 press center.

Facing Putin in Bratislava
12:08, 21/02/2005, By Ariel Cohen, "The Washington Times"

President Bush`s summit with Vladimir Putin in Bratislava Thursday Feb. 24 will be the most difficult meeting two men ever had. A year after Mr. Putin handily won a second presidential term, his domestic and foreign challenges are snowballing, and his aura of an almost-superhuman invincibility is quickly dissipating. This is not to say Mr. Putin should be looked down upon or counted out: He is still in control.

The three reports that astounded The Russian America.
