Tbilisi Protests Visit by Belarus Officials to Abkhazia
11:51, 20/05/2005, Civil Georgia

Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze expressed protest on May 19 regarding the recent visit by an official delegation from the Belarus Parliament and the President’s Administration to breakaway Abkhazia without the prior notification of Tbilisi.

“I am not astonished that our Belarus colleagues are violating elementary norms, including the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Burjanadze said on May 19.

A 70-member delegation from Belarus, led by Parliamentary Speaker Vladimir Konopliov, arrived in breakaway Abkhazia on May 15, Apsnypress news agency reported on May 18.

The members of this delegation held talks with Abkhaz Parliament Speaker Nugzar Ashuba, who said after the talks that Sokhumi is interested in strengthening relations “between Abkhazia and Belarus.” Ashuba added that a reciprocal visit by an Abkhaz delegation to Belarus is planned, according to Apsnypress.
