People arrested in Belarus for distributing program of Euronews

19 years old activist of civil initiative “For clean Barysau” Andrey Malasay was arrested for distributing program of Euronews. 330 leaflets were confiscated. Malasay was taken to police station. Policemen registered his fingerprints and filmed on video camera. Next day commission viewing his case said that he can be expelled from ecological lyceum where he studies, informs “Viasna”.

“Pressball” newspaper is at court again

Libel action on 14 500 000 rubles (about USD 7000) was brought against “Pressball” newspaper. Chief book keeper of State college of Olympic reserve Sviatlana Romanovich charged newspaper of committing her moral harm. Though her surname was not even written in the article written by well-known biathlete Sviatlana Paramygina.

Yanush Anyshkevich: this candidate must be supported till the victory

Vice-speaker of European Parliament Yanush Anyshkevich commented nomination of the single candidate: “I think that it was very and very important first of all for those who wishes good to Belarusian democracy. We would like to have a single candidate for the dialogue. Earlier we had many. Now we have a chance that situation is going to change. I can see the chance because this candidate must be supported till the victory. As I wrote in the appeal to the Congress they should concentrate around the nominated candidates to avoid possible personal disappointment among those who was not elected. Professional School Student Detained in Barysau

According to Siarzhuk Salash of the civil initiative "For Clean Barysau!", on 25 September during the distribution of the times of the Belarusian programs on Euronews, a 19 year old activist of the civil initiative "For Clean Barysau!" was detained. Andrei Malasai, a student of the Barysau professional ecological lyceum. 330 fly sheets were taken away from the boy. A.Malasai was brought to the Main Department of Internal Affairs where they interrogated him and took his fingerprints. The boy was videoed. On the following day the case of A.Malasai was considered by the administration of the educational establishment. During the consideration it was made clear to the boy that he might be expelled from the lyceum.

The leader of the Hrodna businessmen Valiery Lievanieuski who is now serving a sentence in Ivatsevichy Prison asks the administration to open a chamber for believers of various denominations. Uladzimir Levanieuski, the prisoner`s son, told Radio Liberty about this initiative of his father.

Information war unleashed against Belarus - Lukashenko.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko accused western countries of unleashing "a veritable information war" against the republic. "We live in a situation when an information war has been unleashed against Belarus and we have to protect the people from this war," Lukashenko said at a meeting of the Security Council on Friday.

The fragmented political opposition in Belarus chose a former U.S.-educated physicist Sunday to challenge President Alexander Lukashenko, dubbed "Europe‘s last dictator," in next year‘s presidential election. According to the Zhodzina officials, keeping a grade for two students is expensive for the town budget. Ianka`s parents refused to have the son transferred to a Russian language school.

Internet in Belarus: some statistics

According to Sergei Rudnev, Ministry of Communications Informatization Department leading expert, the year of 2004 showed a record 50% increase of the number of Internet users in Belarus (2 461 093 users by the end of 2004, compared to 1 627 048 in 2003). The average annual increase of the number of users is some 30%.
