The site www.solidarity16.org offers to inform all friends and family members about the Day of Belarusian Solidarity on November 16 using mobile phones. One can send an SMS from a mobile phone to all those who are ready to take part in the action. At the site www.solidarity16.org you can find the text of the message in different languages. A text of a leaflet, which can be disseminated among acquaintances, can be found there as well.

Political Prisoner Mikola Statkevich Shifted to Home Regime

Administration of the special settlement shifted the leader of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Narodnaya Hramada) Mikola Statkevich to the home regime. As we have informed, the oppositional politician was serving a sentence in Baranavichy colony for organizing street rallies on October 18 and 19 protesting against rigged results of the elections and referendum in October 2004.

Authorities “Cleanse" Media Ahead Of 2006 Vote

This week Belposhta, Belarus`s state postal service decided to exclude three private periodicals from its subscription catalogue for the first half of 2006. Belposhta is a monopoly, which disseminates the country`s press through subscription. The move seems to be a repressive measure intended to marginalize the remainder of opposition-minded press in Belarus ahead of the 2006 presidential election.

Single Candidate to Presidency Goes on Stump

The leader of the united opposition, a democratic candidate for presidency in Belarus Alyaksandr Milinkevich takes the stump over the country. On November 11 in the morning he arrived to Baranavichy from Moscow, where he had met with the representatives of Russian political circles and business elite.

Ukrainian “Pora” Supports Day of Belarusian Solidarity

The Ukrainian party “Pora” has supported the Day of Belarusian Solidarity on November 16. “The initiative if holding the Days of Solidarity is very original. It is extremely important that the Belarusian democratic community has a possibility to really show its active citizenship through such peaceful methods. As far as I understand, nothing of the kind had happened before, it’s an interesting idea. The most important thing is that it mobilizes people. It’s a kind of check of the authorities’ reaction, and civil society’s activeness,” told the leader of the “Pora” party Vladislav Kaskiv to the Charter’97 press center.

“Mestnaya Gazeta” Issue Arrested

On November 10 in Vaukavysk a vendor of the independent newspaper “Mestnaya Gazeta” Marharyta Makavetskaya was detained. A report was drawn up against her. She was taken to the court and fined 10,000 Br for selling the newspapers in an improper place. 400 copies of the newspaper were seized from her.

27th Day of Mikalay Autukhovich’s Hunger Strike in Prison

Hrodna regional court has considered an appeal from the court of Lenin district of Hrodna by lawyers of the entrepreneur Mikalay Autukhovich concerning the measure of restraint for him. The regional court has decided that the entrepreneur from Vaukavysk had been arrested legally, as he is an accused in a criminal case for tax evasion which caused large damages for the state budget. The regional court affirmed that decision. According to the latest information, Mikalay Autukhovich continues his hunger strike for the 27th day.

Zinaida Hanchar Addresses Deputy Salauiou Concerning Disappearance of Viktar Hanchar

Zinaida Hanchar, wife of the missing politician Viktar Hanchar, sent open letter to the deputy of the Chamber of Representatives Anatol Salauiou who presented to the Assembly of the Inter-parliamentary Union of Russia and Belarus false information about the process of investigation of Hanchar’s kidnapping. Here’s the text of the letter:

Belarusian Poles Ignore Official Union of Poles

On 6 November the meeting of members of the Union of Poles with Iuzaf Luchnik (whom Belarusian authorities consider as the chair of the UPB) was to have taken place in the town of Sapotskin in Hrodna district. Members of the union were informed about the meeting by announcements and some of them even received personal invitations. However, the town citizens ignored the meeting: only to persons came to it. The majority of the town citizens are Poles, but they still support the democratically elected chair of their organization, Anzhalika Borys, despite the refusal of the authorities to confess her official position.

Minsk criticizes EU resolution on Belarus

The European Union`s resolution on the political situation in Belarus shows "a desire to impose its will on the [Belarusian] authorities and society, not stopping even at threats," the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Russian Foreign Ministry clashes with EU on democracy in Belarus

The Russian Foreign Ministry disagrees with the European Union`s assessment of democracy-related problems in Belarus, the ministry said Thursday. "We know the EU`s critical state of mind in regard to Belarus," the ministry statement said. "At the same time, we can`t agree that Belarus is a problem zone in regard to democracy."

Svietlahorsk Cellulose-Pasteboard Combine Nationalized

Svietlahorsk Cellulose-Pasteboard Combine was one of the first to be privatized. In 1994 it became a joint-stock company. Recently the state has emitted more than 17 billion rubles in it. Almost 1,5 million actions were issued. As a result, the state share in the statute capital of the combine increased from 47% to 76%. Accordingly, the share of other stockholders became smaller and the number of the physical bodies, including the combine workers, decreased.
