Vendors Ask Lukashenka For Audience
12:21, 01/12/2005

Today activists of the vendors’ movement addressed Alyaksandr Lukashenka with a request for a personal meeting. The letter was signed by the members of markets’ councils, created under the control of the authorities after a wave of protest of small vendors last spring, the Belorusskiy Partizan informs.

Entrepreneurs say that their peaceful talks with the authorities have come to a deadlock. The entrepreneurship department’s officials, delegated by the state to solve problems of small business, do not have either authority or wish to do anything.

While talks were underway, the conditions for work of the entrepreneurs have become much more complicated. They have more paperwork and problems with bookkeeping now. Besides, trying to fight alcoholism, since December 16 the Council of Ministers practically banned perfume trade for all small business. Before perfumes, selling furs, fur coats, house equipment was banned for small vendors.

It looks like meeting with Lukashenka is the last hope for the vendors to solve problems in a peaceful way.
