“Amnesty International” to hold actions of solidarity with Belarus all over Europe 18:49, 13/02/2006

February 16, the remedial organization Amnesty International is to hold actions of solidarity with Belarus in numerous European cities. Before the solidarity day, on February 13, the German office of Amnesty International held actions of solidarity with the Zubr movement. The Belarusian youth movement had its 5-year anniversary on that day. Human rights defenders from Berlin, Bonn, Duisburg, Heidelberg, Jen, Carlsbad, Cologne, Leipzig, Potsdam, Wirsburg and Zurich congratulated the Zubr movement and wished the Belarusian youth success in their struggle for Freedom and Democracy in Belarus.

Milinkevich’s policy becomes more rigid. Obviously, the electoral commissions will comprise only those dependent on the State; thus, the opposition is loosing hopes for honest count. At the recent meetings with voters held in different Belarusian regions (Smargon, Ashmiany, Grodna) Alyaxandr Milinkevich called his supporters to vote on March 19 from 12.00 till 14.00, to get on a train and to arrive in Minsk.

February 11, the Minsk Leninskiy District court sentenced Aliaxandar Makayeu, the chairman of the entrepreneurs’ coordination board, to the 10-day arrest. The entrepreneur is accused of organization of the illegal action held February 11, at the “Chervienski” market.

The Free Theater of Belarus, not yet a year old, has no home, no permanent troupe and, for now, only three short plays in its repertory. It staged them for a while in a cramped bar called Graffiti in an industrial neighborhood of Minsk, the Belarussian capital, but the authorities warned the bar`s owner to stop.

Petras Vaitekunas, the Lithuanian ambassador to Belarus, has flatly denied Belarusian state media allegations that Belarusian opposition youth militants are trained at camps in Lithuania. “Unfortunately, these are not hollow words or children’s games. The training of youth groups in methods of staging street actions and resisting law-enforcement agencies has already been organized. Special exercises are being held in camps of Lithuania, Ukraine, Poland and the Czech Republic,” said Belarus’ government-controlled newspaper Zvyazda in an article under the headline, “Youths Trained to Pull Revolution Chestnuts out of the Fire,” which was published on February 7.

Police officers on February 11 raided a basement room belonging to Vladimir Radivonchik, opposition presidential nominee Aleksandr Milinkevich`s regional campaign manager in Brest. According to Mr. Radivonchik, who is deputy chairman of the regional organization of the United Civic Party (UCP), the police explained that they had received an anonymous telephone tip that ammunition might be stored in the room.

The Minsk city government has adopted a list of some 30 places, mostly public parks, across the city where presidential contenders will be allowed to hold meetings with voters, and a list of 39 places where candidates may post their campaign materials.

Vice-chairman of Lithuanian Delegation in the Council of Europe, chairman of the sub-committee on European neighbourhood of Lithuanian Seimas’ Foreign Affairs Committee Emmanuelis Zingeris stated his readiness to oversee the creation of the list of ideological accomplices of Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s regime, to whom entry to the EU territory would be banned.
