Alyaksandr Milinkevich: “Trampling On Bykau and Skaryna Not Only Due to Ignorance” 16:35, 07/03/2006
The speech of the democratic presidential hopeful Alyaksandr Milinkevich was broadcast on First National Radio channel with outtakes yesterday. Regime’s censors have eliminated quotations of outrageously illiterate words by Alyaksandr Lukashenka at the so-called “All-Belarusian assembly”, relating to Belarusian first pressman Frantsysk Skaryna. We would like to offer the text of the outtake.
In the broadcasting the following words of the candidate for presidency were omitted.
“At this assemblage he has trampled under foot Skaryna again. “Skaryna is not only our man, he also worked in Petersburg,” he said. He does not know that Skaryna lived 200 years earlier than Petersburg’s foundation. He is in complete ignorance that Vasil Bykau had never written poems. And should such a man rule us?
But trampling under foot Bykau and Skaryna is not caused only by ignorance. It is caused by a desire to belittle all great personalities, to place oneself higher than them; it is a suggestion to his whole system: nobody is important except me.
Do you think that he really feels at home in economy? He shows as much discrimination in that as in Bykau’s poems. Actually his strong point is propaganda.
Belarus has turned into a country of total propaganda. He looks strong only when competitors are neutralized around him. That is why he is afraid of live televised debate. He is afraid of truth, as any word of truth can melt the huge block of lies,” Alyaksandr Milinkevich said.
