Victory of Democrats: Electioneers For Milinkevich Not Detained In Vitsebsk Region Any More 18:44, 09/03/2006
In Vitsebsk region policemen stopped to detain activists of the election campaign for the single democratic presidential candidate Alyaksandr Milinkevich. The Charter’97 press center was informed about that by the head of Vitsebsk campaignheadquarters Khristafor Zhelyapau.
As said by Mr Zhelyapau, democrats have managed to overcome policemen’s arbitrariness by a huge number of complaints, addressed to the regional and district prosecutor’s offices, and to the Central Elections Committee. Until that time campaigners had been constantly detained for distribution of information about Milinkevich, taken to police departments. There printed materials were examined, and they were released only after several hours. However, detentions of activists had not been registered; reports had not been drawn up against them. As a result, when complaints were filed against policemen, they said that they had not detained anybody, and just had “conversations” with activists of Alyaksandr Milinkevich’s campaign.
One of these days Liadziya Yarmoshyna has finally answered to the complaints of democrats, who maintain that “campaign printed materials can be freely distributed at meetings with voters, in the places determined for placing printed campaign materials and outside these places”.
Now, as said by Zhelyapau, Milinkevich headquarters has another problem. Local executive committees have made a list of places, where campaign materials can be placed. As a rule, they are shops, post offices, checkpoints of enterprises and house administrations. However, as said by Zhelyapau, in words representatives of authority order administrations of all these places not to allow campaigners to paste posters and other materials about the democratic there.
Illegal actions of the executive committees are challenged in prosecutor’s offices and in the CEC currently.
