Slave Labour of Political Prisoners in Colonies

A political prisoner, the leader of the Belarusian Social Democrats Mikola Statkevich is serving a two –year sentence in the village of Blon near Marjina Horka. He works as a mechanician at a garage of an agricultural enterprise “Industryja”. The political prisoner, a Candidate of Science in Engineering, a military hardware engineer, works 12 hours a day, which breaches all norms of the labour Code. “No one of the prisoners in the corrective labour facility has such long working hours. On weekends, when all workers have rest, I have to work in a filed or to build cattle chutes. On weekdays I repair electrical equipment of tractors. The head of the special commandant’s office told me that my absence at the working place would be considered as avoidance of serving the sentence, which could cause criminal responsibility,” Mikola Statkevich told to the Charter’97 press center.

Ina Kulej Interrogated in Criminal Case

Today Ina Kulej, the chairman of the Committee of the Repressed Defence “Solidarity”, a wife of the leader of the united democratic forces Alyaksandr Milinkevich, was summoned to the police department of Pershamajski district of Minsk for interrogation as a witness in the criminal case of her son Ihar Kulej. Ina Kulej refused to bear witness against her son, referring to the article 27 of the Constitution of Belarus.

Vitsebsk Authorities Banned Opposition Meeting

Vitsebsk authorities haven’t sanctioned a meeting “For Independence of Belarus”. An application for holding a rally with participation of the leader of the democratic forces of Belarus Alyaksandr Milinkevich had been submitted by local activists of the campaign “For Freedom!”

Leanid Karol: “Wherever I Go, Everybody Shifts Responsibility to Lukashenka!”

Pinsk city court has fined a dweller of the village of Pinkavichy Leanid Karol 620, 000 BYR. He was found guilty for carrying out a rally on September 2 on a stadium “Hvalya” in Pinsk. As we have informed, a 66-year-old pensioner protested against unfair taxation and policy of the regime. For half an hour he was standing near the stadium with a hog-trough and three posters: “Pork barrel”, “Bloodsucker”, “Lukashenka, come on, eat, pest upon you!” Alyaksandr Lukashenka visited that stadium the day before the protest.

In case Belarusian government will continue to violate human rights and trade union rights, the country would be stripped of trade preferences under EU’s Generalised System of Preferences (GSP). “Otherwise all system of trade preferences would be discredited”, - declared the Chairperson of the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions Alyaksandr Yarashuk in an interview to www.praca-by.info . And all EU and diplomatic corps representatives that the trade union leader has met noted this important point. “They do not want to leap before one looks, because [they] consider consequences for economy and workers. At the same time they cannot but use this lever of pressure. It turns out, that the Government of [the Republic of] Belarus receives a bonus, which is used, including for struggle against dissent, against independent press and against independent trade union movement”, - added Mr. Yarashuk.

Lyabedzka: Mental Health of Lukashenka Menaces Belarus

A chairman of the National committee of the united democratic forces of Belarus, the leader of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka addressed the Council of Ministers with an appeal for “adjudication of incompetence of a citizen Alyaksandr Lukashenka”. As said by him, recently many Belarusians are concerned by his behaviour, and “a number of public statements made by him at the summit of the Non-Aligned movement, raise doubts about his legal capacity and exercise”.

Judge Compared His Colleagues with Judges of 1937

On October 6 the court of Svetlahorsk district is to consider the criminal case against a lawyer, a former judge Syarhei Yarashevich, who is charged with insulting judges of Rahachou regional court Uladzimir Salamejchuk and Mikalay Rubisau. In a complaint book the defendant compared Rahachou judges with judges of Stalin era, the year 1937.

Pensioner Fined for Rally against Lukashenka

Prime Ministers of Latvia and Lithuania Refuse to Go to Belarus

Today at a press conference in Minsk an Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Germany in Belarus Martin Hecker told that prime ministers of Latvia and Lithuania Aigars Kalvitis and Gediminas Kirkilas would not participate in the ceremony finishing demarcation of boundaries with Belarus. The reason for that, as the Ambassador stated, was an incident with the worker of Latvian Embassy in Belarus Reimo Smits.

Political Prisoner Syarhei Skrabets Goes on Hunger Strike

On September 25 a former deputy of the parliamentary group “Respublika” Syarhei Skrabets, serving a sentence in the minimum security colony No. 3 announced a hunger strike. He stated about that on the same day when visited by a BelaPAN reporter in the colony situated in the settlement of Vitsba, 3 kilometres from Vitsebsk. As said by him, he went on hunger strike because he hadn’t been nominated for a conditional early release. S. Skrabets has also lodged a complaint to the penal jurisdiction department of the Interior Ministry of Belarus.
