Mahilyou KGB Continues Pressure on Young Front Members

On Monday KGB continued pressure on the detained underage participants of the last meeting of the local branch of the Young Front arrested on September 14. In the end of last week 7 students of Mahilyou lyceums were summoned by administrations of their educational institutions. They had conversations with a KGB officer there. A KGB man threatened eviction and demanded the activists to explain their actions. The same repeated in Mahilyou gymnasium No.2.

Justice Ministry Recalls the Law

The Supreme Court of Belarus has adjourned the consideration of the Justice Ministry on suspension of activities of the Party of Communists of Belarus until the complaint of the party to the official warning of the Justice Ministry would be considered. This complaint is to be considered on October 17 in the Supreme Court.

Lawyer Not Allowed to Visit Kazulin

A lawyer Ihar Rynkevich and a human rights watchdog Aleh Vouchak have been denied a meeting with the former candidate for presidency in Belarus, political prisoner Alyaksandr Kazulin. Radio Svaboda was informed about that by Ihar Rynkevich, who visited the building of the colony Vitsba-3 where Kazulin is kept.

Young Front Activist Interrogated in Case of Vitsebsk Blasts

An activist of the Young Front from Zhodzina Pavel Krasouski is interrogated in the case of blasts in Vitsebsk on September 14 and 22, 2005. He is still interrogated as a witness. Yesterday a search was held in his Zhodzina apartment. After that a computer, CDs and printed materials were confiscated, Radio Svaboda informs. After that Krasouski was transported to Vitsebsk in a police car. He was offered to stay in a hotel for a night at his own expense. In the morning he was summoned to an investigator.

An Activist of Union of Poles Sentenced to Arrest

In Hrodna repeat trial in the administrative case of Meczyslaw Jaskiewicz, an activist of the Union of Poles in Belarus which is not recognized by the authorities. Judge Ludmila Zhuk found him guilty of hooliganism against a TV camera crew and sentenced him to 4 days of arrest.

KGB Overlooks Fascists

The head of Vitsebsk city organization of the United Civil Party Alena Zalesskaya has received an answer from the KGB (State Security Committee) concerning her complaints about threats against her by Russian National Unity (RNE) members. As the head of the KGB in Vitsebsk region Uladzimir Palyashchuk said, “as a result of investigation” it was established that the organization Russian National Unity is not registered by Justice Ministry or justice department of Vitsebsk regional executive committee. No persons belonging to RNE have been found in Vitsebsk region, the KGB letter states.

The conditions in which the Belarusian prisoners are kept have always disturbed the human rights activists. However, it is almost impossible to conduct a qualified monitoring of this issue because of the unwillingness of the authorities to open penitentiary institutions to the public. Most often this information is passed to human rights activists from prisoners, especially prisoners of conscience. Recently Human Rights Center Viasna has received quite an interesting document from Orsha. It is the answer of V.V.Ieustafieu, chair of the internal affairs department of Vitsebsk Regional Executive Committee, to Orsha regional ethnographers.

Public Activist from Barysau Thoroughly Examined at the Border

On 3 October the public activist from Barysau Siarhei Salash was thoroughly examined by the border guards on the border with the Ukraine. He was going to Belarus by the train Lviv-Sent Petersburg. The Belarusian border guards examined the train at the first stop on the Belarusian territory. After this the border guards checked the passports.

Political Prisoner Mikola Astrejka Becomes a Father

A political prisoner, an activist of the civil initiative of elections observation “Partnerstva” Mikola Astrejka has become a father. His daughter weight is 3280 grams. Palina Astrejka and her daughter feel well. An activist of “Partnerstva” Mikola Astrejka was transferred to Schklou medium security colony recently. The public activist was sentenced to 2 years of imprisonment of a minimum security colony under Article No. 193 of the Criminal Code (activities on behalf of an unregistered organization). The matter concerns “political amendments” to the Criminal Code passed in the run-up to the presidential elections. Mikola Astrejka was arrested on February 21, 4 days after marriage.

Crisis Came on in Relations of Lukashenka and Putin

A critical situation has formed in Russian-Belarusian relations. President Putin told about that on October 4 at a meeting with leaders of faction of the State Duma. “We had an informative talk. We have discussed a wide range of problems, not only on Caucasus, but on Russian-Belarusian relations. Everybody agreed that a critical situation as formed,” Vice Speaker of the State Duma Sergei Baburin said to “strana.ru”.
