Trade Unions Activist on Hunger Strike Not Allowed to Enter Plant

Today an electrician of “Belshyna” Alena Zakhodzhaya, who continues a hunger strike for the 8th day, was met at the entrance of the plant by a director of the plant Yauhen Khvalko. As the Salidarnasts writes, the director tried to stop the worker from entering the plant, explaining that first she was to be checked by a medical unit.

Minsk Authorities Ignore Hunger Strike of Protest

Minsk city authorities have not reacted to the hunger strike of 132 believers of a Protestant church New Life, though the church had sent a statement about the beginning of a hunger strike to Minsk city executive committee on October 6.The Charter’97 press center was informed by a press secretary of the church New Life Ina Davydovich.

Brest Entrepreneurs Set to Start Hunger Strike Again

As Radio Racyja informs, an entrepreneur Lubou Laurukovich, Brest owners of taxi minibuses are ready to restart a hunger strike. The reason is a refusal of an interagency commission on economic sanctions reversal, which exempted from taxes only entrepreneurs who hadn’t been challenging taxes in the court.

Public Organizations Turn Into State Ones

Crack down of civil society and people’s activism is done not only in the form of closing public associations, but turning them into state organizations. Notably, taking control over those organizations by state officials is observed in the most numerous and influential structures. It was demonstrated at a regional conference of a public association “Belarusian Women’s Union” recently held in Hrodna.

Cuban Delegation Interested in Belarusian Banks

On October 9 a meeting of the National Bank of Belarus cochairman Pyort Prakapovich and the first vice president of the Central bank of Cuba took place in Minsk. The visit of the Cuban delegation started on October 8 and will last till October 11. The delegation is to hold negotiations with the larges Belarusian banks and visit Minsk Automobile Plant.

Dashkevich Placed to Ward with Prisoners Suffering From TB, Hepatitis and AIDS

A meeting of a working group of the campaign in defence of political prisoners has taken place at the headquarters of the Belarusian Popular Front party. Participants of the meeting discussed the situation of young leaders Zmitser Dashkevich and Pavel Krasouski, and planned a number of rallies. A journalist Henadz Barbarych read a letter of Zmitser Dashkevich in which he complained about incarceration conditions. According to the letter, Zmitser Dashkevich stays in a ward with 15 other prisoners. There are persons suffering from tuberculosis, hepatitis and AIDS among them.

132 Protestants on Hunger Strike in Minsk

132 believers of New Life Church are taking part in the hunger strike now. The hunger strike started on October 6. People from Mozyr, Dzyarzhynsk, Staubtsy, Zhodizna are arriving to protect the church. The Charter’97 press center was informed about that by representatives of the church. As said by them, today several dozens of people have spent the night in the building of the church. 500 persons have taken part in yesterday’s prayer service.

Elections to Local Soviets to be Held on January 14, 2007

Alyaksandr Lukashenka by his decree ruled that local Soviets election to take place on January 14, Interfax was informed in the press-service of the head of state. “On October 10 Alyaksandr Lukashenka signed a decree and set the date for the elections to local Soviets of Belarus of the 25th calling on January 14, 2007,” the press service informed.

Pavel Krasoiuski’s Fate Hangs in the Balance

Meeting of investigators with the detained youth activist Pavel Krasouski is scheduled for October 10 at 2 p.m. During the meeting it is to be decided whether the young activist would stay detained in the remind prison or the measure of restraint would be changed for him. Radio Racyja has been informed about that by a representative of a human rights center Viasna Leanid Svetsik. He also told that Krasouski’s interests would be defended by a Minsk lawyer Pavel Sapelka and Vitsebsk lawyer Vyachaslau Praskalovich.
