Workers of “Belshyna” Appointed Day of Mass Hunger Strike

In Babrujsk a member of the Belarusian Independent Trade Union (BITU), an electrician of a joint stock company “Belshyna” Alena Zakhodzhaya continues a hunger strike for the 14th day. Today members of the primary organization “Belshyna” have sent information to Babrujsk city executive committee, “Belnaftakhim” concern, the State Security Committee and the administration of a joint stock company “Belshyna” that they are joining the hunger strike, Radio Svaboda informs.

Belarus: Minsk Theater Group Appears In New York

Belarus`s Free Theatre company will make its first U.S. appearance today. Appearing at the Impact Theater Festival in New York, players will read in English work from Belarusian playwrights.

Belarusian Youth Expresses Solidarity with Political Prisoners (Photo)

Today, on the Day of Belarusian Solidarity, young activists placed a 7-metre streamer “Freedom to political prisoners!” on the bridge at Maskouskaya Street in Minsk. In this way Belarusian young people expressed solidarity with Belarusian oppositionists, who are serving prison terms and restriction of freedom. There are 13 political prisoners in Belarus today.

EU launches scholarships for Belarusian students kicked out of their universities

The European Union launched a scholarship program Monday for Belarusian students kicked out of their home universities for opposition activities, offering to support their studies in neighboring Lithuania and Ukraine.

The magazine «ARCHE. Pachatak» appeals the decision of the Ministry of Information

The hearing of the appeal of the editorial staff of the magazine "ARCHE.Pachatak" will take place in the superior court (Valadarskaha Street, 8-212) on October 18 at 10 a.m. The editorial staff demands to cancel the warning about violating the law and the decision to suspend the printing of the edition.

«BELSAJUZDRUK» refuses to distribute «VESTNIK KULTURY»

“Belsayzdruk” refuses to distribute one more independent newspaper. The editorial staff of “Vestnik Kultury” have received a letter signed by the head of "Belsajuzdruk" I.Didzich who expressed a decision to cancel their contract because of financial inexpediency. It was stated that "Belsajuzdruk" lost 1082 BRB as a result of distribution of "Vestnik Kultury" in June. The editor proposed to cover the loss in order to change "Belsajuzdruk"`s decision but everything was in vain.

Mikola Astreika Visited by Lawyer

On October 16 Mikola Astreika, activist of the unregistered organization “Partnership”, was visited by his lawyer Valiantsina Shakhantsova. This is the first meeting of Mr. Astreika with his lawyer during the time he has spent in Shklou jail. Yauhenia Astreika, Mikola’s mother, also came to Shklou to see her son. However, the jail administration did not allow their meeting. Now Mrs. Astreika is trying to leave a food parcel for her son.

Police Detains Activists with Balloons

In the evening of October 15 Minsk police detained youth activists Valiantsin Sakalouski, Alena Dziyanina, and Iryna Likhadzied. The young people walked down the main street holding balloons. Police officers V. Bartos and I. Kuliakou detained them and took them to Centralny police station. In 3 hours the activists were released.

No Parole for Ivan Kruk

On the eve of the court sitting that was to have decided the question of the early release of the public activist Ivan Kruk the guards of the jail where he is kept found in his cell a prohibited thing. Ivan Kruk wrote about it in a letter to his wife Volha Kruk. He didn’t specify what it was but wrote that this was the reason why he wasn’t granted parole. V.Kruk doesn’t rule out that this thing could be planted to him.

180 Protestants Continue Hunger Strike For 10 Days

180 parishioners of the New Life Church are continuing a hunger strike in Minsk. People are staying in the building of the church 24 hours a day. Hunger strikers are determined to continue their protest until the authorities open a dialogue with them and return the building of the church to them.

Participants of Flash Mob Arrested in Minsk

On October 15 in the evening young activists were arrested in Minsk. A group of young people was holding a flash mob in the center of the city.

Action of Solidarity with Political Prisoners Held in Mahilyou

A picket and meeting of solidarity with the former candidate for presidency in Belarus, Alyaksandr Kazulin, and with other political prisoners were held in Belarus. The picket was held under slogans “Freedom to Kazulin!”, “Kazulin told the truth!” Participants were holding not only portraits of Alyaksandr Kazulin, but of Tsimafei Dranchuk, Andrei Klimau, Paval Sevyarynets.

Pavel Krasouski Released But Restricted

On Sunday evening a young activist Pavel Krasouski was released from Vitsebsk remand prison on his own recognisance. The Charter’97 press center was informed about that by that by the leader of the Young Front Artur Finkevich. As before, Pavel is a suspect in the cases of Vitsebsk blasts in 2005. On October 15 a 10-day period during which a detained is to be presented accusation, expired.

Today is the Day of Belarusian Solidarity

On the 16th day of every month hundreds thousands of Belarusians and friends of our country all over the world light candles of Freeodm in their windows, stage street actions of solidarity, attach jeans and white-red-white ribbons to their clothes, take part in flash-mobs and internet-actions. Church services are held all over the world for those who stay in prisons on Belarus, for the families of the disappeared oppositionists, for all those who fight for freedom and democracy in Belarus. Not only common citizens, but heads of parliaments and governments, presidents of many courtiers show their solidarity with Belarus.
