Flash mob on October 16 in Homel 12:07, 17/10/2006
On October 16 in Homel a flash mob “Candles of Freedom” was held. At 8 p.m. more than 50 young people who wanted to express their solidarity with the repressed Belarusians gathered by the monument of Cyril from Turau. The protest action had been widely announced. There have never been so many young people participating in flash mobs in Homel before.
Detentions followed. 20 young people were arrested by riot policemen and KGB officers in mufti. Near the monument 30 law-enforcers were waiting for protesters. In order to minimize the chances toesacpe, the district where the rally was held, was cordoned off by riot policemen.
As said by Dzyanis Minkou, Zmitser Chalap, Volha Burankova and Zmitser Kutasau, when activists lit candles, arrests started. The destined were transported to the police department of Tsentralny district of Homel. They were interrogated, videotaped, their passport details were copied. The reports have not been drawn up. Policemen refused to say their names. They searched the detainees and held interrogation in a brutal and offensive manner, using foul language, insulting girls.
The last detainee was released in an hour and a half.
