Are Belarusian Students to be Tracked Down by Interpol? 18:09, 18/12/2006

Draft committees of military enlistment offices are trying to summon students from Homel region who are studying abroad. Earlier those students studied in Belarus, but they were evicted for participating in peaceful protest rallies. 
Day of Solidarity in Washington 17:50, 18/12/2006

On December 16 in Washington in front of the Belarusian Embassy an action of solidarity with people of Belarus was held. Members of the civil initiative “Pohlyad”, representatives of the Belarusian expat community in the USA, students from Belarus and the founder of the civil initiative “We Remember” Iryna Krasouskaya have taken part in the protest.

On December 16 in Prague a traditional action was held. It was dedicated to the Day of Belarusian solidarity. Czechs, Poles and Belarusians gathered on Krizovnicka Square near the Charles Bridge to express their solidarity with Belarusian political prisoners and their families. 
EU President Called Belarus “Scar on Democratic Europe’s Face” 17:28, 18/12/2006

Summing up the results of the 6-months presidency in the EU which finishes in the end of this year, Mr. Matti Vanhanen, Prime Minister of Finland stated that he regrets talks on a new multilateral agreement with Russia hasn’t been started this year. He believes that Russia and the EU share many common directions of work; however he is not sure Russia is moving in the right direction of the rule of law and civil society. Mr. Matti Vanhanen still sees the danger of Russia’s backslide to authoritarianism. Speaking about Belarus, he was even harsher. “On our doorstep we have Belarus, a black hole on the face of European democracy, a scar on the face of Europe, a Europe that should be unblemished,” he said, Reuters news agency reports.

Radio Svaboda has been informed about that by the wife of the political prisoner, Iryna Kazulina. As said by Mrs. Kazulina, in the last letter her husband told that he also sends an address to Belarusians, written on the occasion of his hunger strike’s ending. However there was no address in the envelope together with the letter. 
Homel KGB Branch Filed Criminal Charges against Fascists 12:18, 18/12/2006

Homel regional KGB branch has instituted criminal proceedings against two leaders of the unregistered organization "Russian National Unity" (RNU), as informed by Interfax with a reference to the KGB branch press service.

Participants of Conference in Chernihiv Detained 11:08, 18/12/2006

On December 17 in the evening the head of Homel regional branch of the Belarusian Social Democratic party (Hramada) Syarhei Starychenka and his associate from Rechytsa Aleh Shabetnik were detained at Belarusian-Ukrainian border for 2 hours. Homel customs officers detained them in a train Chernihiv-Homel at Tserukha station in Belarus. Social Democrats were on their way to Homel from a organizing conference of the Union of the Left parties of Belarus. Customs officers explained the detention by the fact that the party activists were allegedly transporting illegal printed materials.

A failure of the talks between Russian and Belarusian presidents, at which Alyaksandr Lukashenka did not manage to bargain down the new price of Russian natural gas or oil for Belarus, or keeping returns from oil refining, has been taken seriously by Belarus. Lukashenka has dropped his traditional harsh comments on Russia, and the opposition stated about an imminent "Anschluss" of Belarus with Russia. 13 days are left for Minsk to agree on Russia`s demands, the Russian newspaper "Kommersant" writes.
