Establishment of an initiative, even a civil initiative, which aim is to help journalists to improve their skills, could be only welcomed, said the chairperson of the Belarusian Association of journalists Zhana Litvina, informing about formation of a civil Academy of a Journalist. To her mind, Belarusian journalists have limited possibilities to improve their qualification.
“But the name of one of the faculties of the newly-formed Academy of a Journalist is surprising. An ideology faculty is to function there, and it makes clear that once again we witness a situation when a profession of a journalist is substituted by work of ideologists and propagandists,” told the chairperson of the Belarusian Association of journalists.
The BAJ is defending the profession’s integrity all the time. The organization wants journalists to perform their tasks, which is by the way is guaranteed to us band Belarusian citizens by the Belarusian laws and Constitution, Zhana Litvina says. “I am sincerely glad that our partner organization, the Belarusian union of journalists, has had an opportunity to open such an organization. But it is extremely upsetting that the basic functions of our profession are substituted by propagandistic and ideological activities”.
The chairperson of the journalistic human rights organization says that opening of an ideology faculty of the Academy of a Journalist, is a confirmation that today’s executive authorities impose their vision of a role and place of a journalist in the society. They turn journalism into a services sector, and thus once again confirming their wish to use our profession for the sake of their own stability and security.
