Congress of democratic forces to take place on May 26-27 :: Charter'97 :: News

The Congress of the democratic forces of Belarus is to take place on May 26-27 in the Palace of culture of Minsk automobile plant. There are 916 delegates on the list of the Congress participants. They include activists elected at meetings, participants of election campaigns and 22 prominent personalities: Uladzimir Arlou, Ryhor Baradulin, Nil Hilevich, Radzsim Haretski and others. More than 100 persons have a status of guests. The intrigue of the event lies in presence of opposition leaders, former political prisoners Mikola Statkevich and Paval Sevyarynets.

Representatives of Embassies and international organizations accredited in Belarus have been invited to the Congress. MPs of Swedish parliament, a deputy of the Russian State Duma Vladimir Ryzhkov and the chairman of the Union of Right Forces Nikita Belykh are to arrive to the Congress.

In line with the decision of delegates of regional conferences the democratic coalition is to be headed by co-chairmen. The current chairman of the Political Council of the democratic forces, Alyaksandr Milinkevich, is to address the Congress; however he had decided not to be nominated for a co-chairman.
