This time the Pinsk (Brest region) population was ordered to remove the private satellite dish antennas. The advertisements with corresponding order appeared at the entrances of blocks of flats all over the town.

Chairman of the International Trade Union Association of Metal Workers (ITUA) Nikolai Shatokhin is sure that scandal with the forged signatures of the ITUA members under the appeal of the “group of working people” compiled by the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus (FTUB) will negatively effect the FTUB image .We haven’t anticipated that”, Nikolai Shatokhin declared commenting on the incident to the site www.praca-by.info.

Belarus among European leaders by number of prisoners

Belarus possesses one of the highest ratings by the number of prisoners in Europe: 426 people per 100 thousands of population. Those are the data of the latest studies of the International Center of Investigation of Prisons at the London King’s College, the Radio Svaboda informs. The top ten includes 7 other post-soviet countries.

Picket in defense of freedom of worship banned

A co-chairman of the Belarusian Christian Democracy and an applicant for holding a rally Alyaksei Shein has received a refusal of Minsk city executive committee for holding a picket in defense of freedom of worship. The protest was to take place on June 8 in Bangalore Square in Minsk.

Vintsuk Vyachorka: “European March will unite democratic forces in action”

“Belarus must immediately answer benevolent proposals of the European Union to fulfill 12 requirements for democratization and get access to European programs, preferences, investment, credits and technologies. In October European March “For Freedom!” we shall demand authorities to support offers of the EU to save the country from an unavoidable crisis. European March is to unite the responsible democratic forces in action, and not only in wordplays,” told the leader of the Belarusian Popular Front party Vintsuk Vyachorka.

Authorities do not make over Bernardine monastery

On May 28 defenders of the monastery complex of the 17th century, Ivona Matsukevich and Hanna Siuchyk met the head of Minsk city executive committee Mikhail Paulau. On behalf of belivers the activists tried to find out about the future of the buildings of the church and Bernardine monastery which authorities plan to rebuild into a hotel complex.

Protestant pastor arrested for second time in eight days in Minsk

Antony Bokun, the pastor of a Minsk-based Protestant community called St. John the Divine Church, was grabbed by police while conducting a religious service in his house on Sunday, his second arrest in eight days.

Does KGB Press-Secretary Need OSCE Seminar?

On June 4-5 Miklos Haraszti, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, held a seminar for press-secretaries on interaction with journalists. The seminar has been organized by the OSCE office in Minsk. Heads of press-services of state agencies are taking part at the seminar. The Belarusian Association of Journalists which unites independent journalists, is not to take part in the seminar. “I do not completely understand which kind of seminar it is. The leadership of the Belarusian Association of Journalists hasn’t been invited to the seminar,” the Charter’97 press-center was told by Zhana Litvina, the chair of the BAJ.

The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) said today that nearly 60 journalists have been slain in recent months, and prosecutions of journalists are on the rise.

Student Protesters Announce Hunger Strike

As the Charter’97 press-center has been informed, participants of the student protest against repeal of benefits, Pavel Vinahradau, Vadzim Baravik, Pavel Chumakou, Pavel Viltouski and Alyaksandr Barazenka have announced a hunger strike of protest. Today the young activists are to stand trial in the court of Tsentralny district of Minsk. Before that they have spent two days in a remand prison of Interior Affairs department of Minsk. Today trials over young activists detained on June 1 during a protest rally against repeal of benefits are to take place in the court of the Tsentralny district of Minsk. As the Charter’97 press-center has found out, 5 activists had spent two days in a remand prison of the Internal Affairs department of Minsk city executive committee. The names of four of them are known: Pavel Vinahradau, Vadzim Baravik, Pavel Chumakou, Pavel Viltouski. Ilya Shust has been placed to a city hospital No.4. After being beaten up by riot policemen, he was diagnosed a kidney contusion, bruises and suspected a traumatic brain injury by doctors.
