Jewish community in Hrodna commemorates Holocaust victims

Members of the Jewish community in Hrodna on Sunday staged a prayer service and laid flowers at the memorial to the number one ghetto in the western city.

The commemorative event was part a Week of Memory about the Holocaust and World War II.

The Week of Memory began on November 18 with an exhibition of children's books about the Holocaust, organized by the Jewish community and the city's central library.

A meeting between Jewish youths and WWII veterans who participated in the 1942-1943 Battle of Stalingrad is scheduled to be held on November 28 within the framework of the week. It is to wrap up at the end of this week with a performance about the Holocaust by students of gymnasium No. 1.

"We have been holding the Week of Memory two times a year for eight years," Alena Kutsevich, chairwoman of the local Jewish community, told BelaPAN. "In the spring, we commemorate the killing of prisoners in two ghettos in Hrodna, and in the fall, the killing of Jews in Minsk and other Belarusian cities."
