Condoleezza Rice Met with Belarusian Democrats

During the meeting the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice reiterated the support of the United States for the democratic aspirations of the Belarusian people stated and stressed that the US will always speak out for the cause of freedom in Belarus.

A delegation of 7 persons is on the visit to Washington. On December 4 US Helsinki Committee of the US Congress organizes a meeting with representatives of the Belarusian opposition, the press release of the commission reads. Participants from the Belarusian side are Alyaksandr Milinkevich, Anatol Lyabedzka, Enira Branitskaya, Anatol Lyaukovich, Syarhei Kalyakin, Dzmitry Fedaruk, Paval Sevyarynets.

Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE), or Helsinki Commission is s an independent U.S. Government agency. The Commission is responsible for monitoring and encouraging compliance with the agreements of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, as established by the Helsinki Final Act, and other OSCE commitments. The Commission consists of 9 Senators, 9 members of the Chamber of Representatives of the Congress and one representative from the Department of State, Departments of Defense and Department of Commerce. Now the Commission is headed by Alcee L. Hastings. Earlier the Commission was headed by a Republican Christopher Smith, one of the initiators of the Belarus Democracy Act.
