Charhinets: “I’ve decided to go on”

“The best form of communication when somebody disagrees is a court. It is accepted throughout the world. You shouldn’t cackle, swear, take a sword or pistols for a duel,” stated the chairman of the standing commission of the “council of republic” on international affairs and national security Mikalay Charhinets, commenting his suit against “Nash Chas” newspaper and journalist Alyaksandr Tamkovich to mass media.
As we have informed, M. Charhinets’s claim is based on A. Tamkovich’s essay “General-Senator Charhinets” published in the issue No.25 of the newspaper of September 24 this year. The member of the council of republic believes that some phrases in the article injure his honour and dignity. The applicant demands the editorial office to pay him for moral damage 500 millions rubles, and 100 million from A. Tamkovich. Besides, in the statement of claim Charhinest demands to arrest accounts of the unitary enterprise “Vremya Novostei” that publishes the newspaper “Novy Chas”. The court session is appointed for December 19.
Explaining the essence of his suit, M. Charhinets stated that information in the article is a libel, and submitted documents about that to the court.
“How could I be charged with Vitsebsk affairs when I was working in Minsk at that time? On the contrary, when I came to Internal Affairs Department, I raised that issue, and I compelled to hold a panel of the USSR General prosecutor’s office. I have letters from the General prosecutor’s office stating that thanks to Charhinets the crimes were detected”.
In case the demand would be fulfilled, M. Charhinets plans to give the money for treatment of mentally ill. “I have read in “Narodnaya Volya” that they are concerned more and more people are suffering from mental problems in our country,” the parliamentarian explained his decision.
The future of the newspaper does not interest Charhinets. “Those newspapers that would interpret thing presenting libel will be sued as well. I have decided not to stop, I will make our health care system rich,” Charhinets warned.
