The Surge Worked

5

It was exactly one year ago tonight, in a televised address to the nation, that President George W. Bush announced his fateful decision to change course in Iraq, and to send five additional U.S. combat brigades there as part of a new counterinsurgency strategy and under the command of a new general, David Petraeus.

Mr. MCCAIN: '...as Americans, we have repeatedly done what others said was impossible. '

It's a great remark about promotion of DEMOCRACY in the world. Particularly, regarding our national Belarusan situation, the EU have much to learn from this American idea. If we truly believe in FREEDOM (from evil), we must have ability, wisdom and will to share our belief with any (kind of) human beings. That's the ground of real civilization.
Belarus - in Europe; Luka - at rope!

The situation is not quite as easy as described above. The majority of Belarusans are still enamored with Luka and regard the USA with a lot of suspicion.
I do not see how the USA can help change the regime in Belarus. Actually, the recent freezing of assets and other measures were presented by Luka to Belarusans as revenge for his friendship with Venezuela. The people do not know and don't want to know anything about the political prisoners and protests.

Only if the economic situation turns really sour, the people may voice some discontent. However, it is unrealistic to expect any actions on the part of the people to bring the regime down any time soon.

I agree, - Especially it looks real from the point of view of present, so called, REALPOLITIK.
But I think, the 'Real politics, as mainly a (materialistic) modernistic project, has a great lack of consideration of two other aspects/standpoints of real LIFE: of Culture and Natural human will to Freedom &Citizenship.

Conclusion. We must fight (any) dictatorship in all three spheres (economy, policy, culture). But here comes another too unclear question of how our European abilities of promoting goodness are different from American ones...
