Lech Kaczyński: “Changes in Belarus are changes that lead to impossibility of further changes”

President of Poland Lech Kaczyński thinks that the political situation in Belarus hasn’t improved. The politician said it in Warsaw on October 8 during a meeting with head of unrecognised Union of Poles in Belarus Andżelika Borys.

“The changes in Belarus are the changes that lead to impossibility of further changes,” Lech Kaczyński said.

As the polish information agency PAP reports, the main topic of the meeting was position of the Poles in Belarus. L. Kaczyński supported A. Borys, thanked her for her work and defence of the Polish minority in Belarus.

At it was reported earlier, the Polish Foreign Ministry suggested the both recognised and unrecognised unions to unite to improve the relations with the Belarusian authorities. Polish deputy foreign minister Andrzej Kremer denied this information.

L. Kaczyński said that the union, which is governed in a non-democratic way, couldn’t be united with a “real” one, headed by A. Borys.

Speaking about the Belarusian-EU relations, Polish President noted that improving relations with Belarus shouldn’t “harm the Polish minority, which comprises 5 per cent of the population of Belarus”. He noted that “improving relations with Belarus is positive step that demands necessary conditions”. The Polish President also reminded that none of the opposition representatives got to the Belarusian “parliament”.

As BelaPAN informer earlier, in 2005, the Ministry of Justice recognised new direction of the organisation with Andżelika Borys as its head, elected at the 6th session of the union, illegitimate. Another session was held on the insistence of the authorities of the country, and Józef Łucznik was elected chairman. A part of members of the organisation, including founder of the Union of Polis in Belarus Tadeusz Gawin, remained with unrecognised by the authorities as the head A. Borys.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed his support of the unrecognised Union of Poles in Belarus and its head A, Borys during a meeting in Warsaw on 23 September.
