Members of Hrodna branch of the United Civil Party Viktar Padchynenkau and Uladzimir Laryn have asked for a political asylum in Belgium and the Netherlands. The oppositionists explain their actions by persecution by the KGB.
The fact that they saw “candidates for deputies” of the Belarusian parliament Viktar Padchynenkau and the leader of his electoral headquarters Uladzimir Laryn have applied for a political asylum abroad, the head of the regional branch of the UCP party Yuras Istomin said, Radio Racyja informs.
As said by him, now Viktar Padchynenkau stays in Antwerp, and Uladzimir Laryn in Amserdam.
The leadership of the party still does not know exactly what had caused such moves of the oppositionists. The refugees promised to contact them in the near future and give explanation to their decision to leave the country.
Yuras Istomin does not exclude that members of the party were forced to flee abroad fearing the KGB persecution. A few days ago as many other oppositionists they had been summoned for conversation to Hrodna branch of the KGB.
