Andrei Sakharov’s widow supported political prisoner Alyaksandr Kazulin

Human rights activists from the whole world continue an action of solidarity with Belarusian political prisoner Alyaksandr Kazulin.

The leading Russian public figures signed up letters of recommendation for nomination of the Belarusian politician for Andrei Sakharov Prize awarded annually by the European Parliament. Among the signatories is Elena Bonner, widow of academician Andrei Sakharov, chair of the Andrei Sakharov Foundation.

Daughters of the political prisoner Volha and Yuliya addressed Ms Elena with thanks:

“Dear Elena Georgievna,

With all our hearts we express thanks to You for support of our family in the hard time. It’s especially important for our father to know now that we are not alone in the difficulties we have to overcome.

We are grateful to You for the attention You paid to the request of human rights activists on nomination our father for Andrei Sakharov’s Prize For Freedom of Thought.

We hope that support and assistance of the world-known human rights activists will help to release political prisoner, former candidate for presidency of the Republic of Belarus Alyaksandr Kazulin,” the letter runs.

Former presidential candidate Alyaksandr Kazulin was arrested on 25 March 2006 and sentenced to 5 and a half years in penal colony for organising mass protests against rigging the presidential election results.

The EU and the US demand immediate and unconditional release of political prisoner A. Kazulin. Only in this case the official Minsk can expect normalisation of the relation with the West.
