KGB questioned wives of oppositionists

KGB has turned its attention to Alena Kavalenka and Ina Bernikovich – wives of democratic activists –teachers of chemistry and biology. They were asked about 4 July blasts in Minsk.

Teacher of Vitsebsk secondary school #31 Alena Kavalenka, wife of member of the Conservative Christian Party of the Belarusian Popular Front Syarhei Kavalenka, was questioned on phone. A mn, who introduced himself as a KGB officer, asked where the Kavalenkas were at night 3/4 July. He also asked to remind if pupils of Ms Alena had asked her to explain how to make a bomb. At the end of the conversation the woman was hinted that the KGB kept a close eye on opposition activity of her husband Syarhei, Radio Svaboda reports.

Teacher of Verkhnyany secondary school Ina Bernikovich, wife of deputy head of the region BPF office Yaraslau Bernikovich, had a similar talk in Hlybokae district KGB department. KGB officers asked where the family was at night when the bomb exploded in Minsk, and if friends of Ina Bernikovich’s husband, who are gathering signatures for Yaraslau Bernokovich’s nomination as an MP candidate, asked her about explosive substances. Ms Ina is a member of her husband ‘s initiative group. One member of the initiative group, artist Alyaksadnr Myadzelets, who had served in engineer troops, was questioned by KGB. Mr Myadzelets said that other former soldiers of engineer troops were called to the KGB together with him, their fingerprints and saliva specimen were taken.
