Last dictatorship in Europe going to mark Democracy Day

10

The “council of the republic” of the “national assembly” supported an offer of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on marking International Day of Democracy on September 15.

The information department of the secretariat of the “council of the republic” noted that “Belarus actively cooperates with the United Nations and the IPU, initiated adoption of some resolutions of the UN General Assembly, is striving for ensuring protection of democratic rights and freedoms of citizens.”

A decision on observing this holiday was taken by the United Nations General Assembly at the end 2007.

It should be reminded that the international community accused the regime of Lukashenka, called “last dictatorship in Europe”, of violating principles of freedom of speech, freedom of association and freedom of assembly. All elections in Belarus, held under 14-year Lukashenka’s rule, were recognised as unfree and unfair. In 1999-2000, leaders of the Belarusian opposition and a journalist disappeared in Belarus. In particular, the international society suspects that the authorities of the country are involved in these disappearances and murders.
