US Congress to discuss situation in Belarus

The Helsinki Commission at the US Congress is to hold hearing on Belarus, dedicated to discussing the situation in the country ahead of the “election”.

An objective of the hearing is monitoring democracy and human rights in Belarus and fulfilling of OSCE requirements ahead of the parliamentary election by the Belarusian government, Radio Svaboda reports.

The commission notes that political prisoners have been released in Belarus recently, and the official Minsk didn’t show its enthusiasm in supporting Russian aggression against Georgia, that has given a slight hope for improving the relations between Belarus and the US, as well as the European Union. However, there is no visible progress in democratisation and observing human rights ahead of the “election”.
