The National Bank of Belarus hadn’t expected panic foreign currency buying after the Belarusian ruble devaluation.

It has been stated on air of Stolichnoe TV channel by the spokesperson of the National Bank Anatol Drazdou.

“Such a reaction of the population was completely unexpected,” A. Drazdou said, commenting the increased demand for foreign currency as a response to the devaluation of the Belarusian ruble.

“We supposed that seeing the Belarusian ruble to become weaker by 20%, citizens would do the opposite, they would go to banks and sell dollars, as it is becoming profitable,” he explained. Besides, as said by he representative of the National bank, it had been expected that the population “would do some purchases, make deposits”.

“But everything happened just other way around,” A. Drazdou stated.
