A coordinator of “European Belarus” thinks election of president of the European Council and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy is an important event for our country.
“In my view, we have seen a historic event. Such events seem to take place two times a century. The 500-million union of states has own President and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy,” Zmitser Bandarenka told in an interview to the website “European Belarus”.
The politician believes that Belarus will join the European Union, so Lisbon Treaty coming into force on December 1 and election of Herman van Rompuy and Catherine Ashton are the issues that have direct relation to our country.
“I agree with Lech Walesa, who said that another, more solemn, election form could have been chosen. But we should understand that these people were elected by EU heads of states, the authorized elected representatives of their countries and peoples.
I think great responsibility had been laid on Ms Ashton. In fact, she has powers of two former heads – Javier Solana and Benita Ferrero-Waldner. She will be also responsible for policy towards our country.
It’s noticeable that a representative of Belgium has become the first EU president. The country has the same population as Belarus but is much smaller in square. It proves that the European Union is a real family of nations, where small states also have significant roles,” Zmitser Bandarenka said.
